Riverfront Preparation Underway for Saturday’s Independence Day Celebration
MEMPHIS—The Downtown Memphis Commission’s Independence Day on the River and coordinated Downtown holiday safety plan has prompted updated park and street closures from Memphis River Parks Partnership, including:
Riverside Drive is now closed between Union and Georgia Avenue. Wagner and Beale intersection access is also closed. Streets will reopen on Sunday, July 5 by 3pm.
Tom Lee Park will be closed to the public on Saturday, July 4 beginning at 8am for event preparations and will reopen at 5:30pm.
The South Field of Mud Island, where the MEMPHIS sign is located, is closed to the public until July 5 due to fireworks staging. Please note that Mud Island will remain open, but the South Field will be blocked off.
Regarding parking, on Saturday, July 4:
Greenbelt Parking Lots 1 & 2 will close early on Saturday at 5pm. While
Ashburn-Coppock Lot will be closed.
Martyrs Lot will be closed.
Huling Lot will be closed.
Nettleton Lot will be closed.
Ashburn-Coppock Walkbridge will close at 10pm. Residents from the bluff community can use the walkbridge gate to access/attend the event at Tom Lee Park.
These adjusted gate times align with robust Downtown holiday safety plans and events taking place throughout the area and prevent a strain in managing and safely clearing parking lots in an organized and timely fashion on Saturday evening.
“Our goal is to curb any unwanted behaviors and activities while keeping Downtown parks clean and safe,” said Hateisha Williamson, Memphis River Parks Director of Operations. “Pedestrian guests are welcome at all parks — only the parking lots are closed.”
