Second annual Gumption Revival Lantern Parade to honor Memphis hero in Tom Lee Park

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis River Park officials gear up for the second annual Tom Lee’s Mississippi River Gumption Revival Lantern Parade in October to honor Memphis hero Tom Lee.

A century ago, Tom Lee risked his life to row into the Mississippi River current and save thirty-two people from a capsized steamboat, guided only by a small lantern.

The parade is set to take place on October 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Tom Lee Park.

Jasmine Coleman, director of programming and engagement for Memphis River Parks, sat down with Action News 5 to provide details on the event.

Memphis River Parks is hosting multiple workshops on-site at Beale Street Landing throughout September. The organization is also providing a list of materials for people who want to make their own lanterns at home.
